Enhancing ductility in bulk metallic glasses by straining during cooling

Abstract Most of the known bulk metallic glasses lack sufficient ductility or toughness when fabricated under conditions resulting in glass formation. To address this major shortcoming, processing techniques to improve that mechanically affect have been developed, however it remains unclear for which formers they work and by how much. Instead manipulating state, we show here an applied strain rate can excite liquid, simultaneous cooling results freezing excited liquid into a with higher fictive temperature. Microscopically, straining causes structure dilate, hence “pulls” energetically up potential energy landscape. Upon further cooling, freezes exhibits enhanced ductility.
